Garland I.S.D. has approximately 7,500 employees and is the largest employer in the City of Garland. Employee safety is always at the forefront of this Risk Management department. One of Russell’s top priorities is the safety of approximately 400 commercially licensed drivers that transport about 17,000 students a day twice a day. Garland has a fleet of 660 vehicles of which 282 are school buses. The programs that Russell has put in place include repeated safety meetings with drivers, accident remediation training and working within the district and city to create safer traffic conditions. Due to these programs, accidents have decreased appreciably and an increased awareness has been placed on accident prevention. Russell is also responsible for insuring that the district is in compliance with the Department of Transportation regulations. Besides the fleet safety responsibilities, Russell works with the safety specialist and the workers’ compensation specialist at GISD to provide a safer workplace for their employees. Russell was a legal assistant for five years and before that a claims adjuster for five years. She has a property and casualty adjuster’s license and received her Associate in Risk Management in May 2007. return to AWARDS |
